About Me

I like to make things (not necessarily following a pattern). I like to indulge in credit crunch retail therapy - I have boxes and boxes of op-shop awesomeness! I have a quilt that never ends which I want to finish this year. I have over a dozen peices of retro furniture to restore. And, I hope one day to have a house to put it all in! When I was four, my dad visited me when I was in hospital and bought me a Little Golden Book called "The Ginhams - The Backwards Picnic". It was a great book, and the whole concept of the backwards picnic (not necessarily doing things the right way or in the right order, but still achieveing the goal) is still used in our family today.

Um....

Ok! So it has been over two years since my last post.  However, I have some progresss!

And:

Back to the sewing! :-)

So, not much blogging has been happening, but, I have been making some progress!  Firstly, the Quilt the Never Ends!

This is an update from May with all the hand stitching done for the top.  The next stage has been to attack the boarder - with a sewing machine this time!

The cream doesn't actually glow in the dark.  I think you'll get the picture.  I've purchased a walking foot, and the batting etc, so I'll be all good to go once the border is sorted.

And, to alternate from the quilt, I've been back into some woodwork  -

A two metre long couch - which is now probably 90% stripped.  The vision is for it to go with the chair that I did at two sets of night classes last year:
I have been stockpiling the fabric, and the foam when it has been on special.

And lastly, a drinks cabinet, which originally looked like this:

And as of last weekend, looks like this:

I haven't quite decided which project is going to get the energy this weekend!  I'll see what I feel like doing tomorrow! :)

Ok, so an update of the projects I've done in the last month!

First, cushion covers for my brother and his girlfriend to take back overseas - made out of old woolen blankets.

Second, my Girl Guide Blanket, otherwise known as the blanket of my mis-spent youth! Well, it's done now. And, all the cotton was sourced from a tray of cottons that came from my grandmothers sewing room. So glad it is done!

And, thirdly, a Russian Doll toy made for my friend's daughter for her first birthday last weekend.

Do-Re-Mi!

Let's start at the very beginning, a very good place to start! Sew - a needle pulling thread - and yes, I like to Sew!

I've wanted to do a blog for a while, and am inspired by some of the awesome blogs out there.

At the moment I am working on a few projects. Instead of a summer we seem to have had monsoon season. I've been able to put some good effort into the Quilt that never ends. This is a hand-stitched quilt started in the summer of 1998-99 when I bought a small amount of quilting fabric with a friend. My friend finished hers in 2009. I'm still going, but nearly there!

Went to the quilting shop today to have a chat to the lovely ladies, and to find out what I have got left to do. From here the plan is to sew (with machine this time) the border around the edge. And, then it will be time for the quilting. I'm going to do this by machine too. My fingers have had enough hand stitching!

I've got another two days holiday left, then its back to work. Tomorrow is lunch with my awesome 88 11/12th year old grandmother, who inspires me by churning out knitting constantly. And, hopefully sorting out the sewing machine to finish off a little project I am very excited about. I've made the pattern myself, and am using scraps of material and stuff I had on hand. I am looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

Also, I hope to get some time in the garage to strip some more varnish of a second hand couch I'm doing up. More on that later!
